Digital Business Card vs vCard QR: Which Should You Print?

Published by Creativall QR · Updated 2026-10-08

A digital business card and a vCard QR both help people share contact details, but they store different things. Choose the format based on whether you need an editable contact page or a contact record that can be read directly from the code.

What an offline vCard QR contains

An offline contact QR encodes the contact fields inside the QR pattern. This can include a name, company, phone, email and website. The scanner needs a compatible application to interpret the vCard. Reading the stored contact does not need this platform to host a page, although opening its website or sending a message still needs the relevant connection. If a phone number changes, the old printed pattern still contains the old number. Generate a new code and replace the printed material. More contact fields also create a denser pattern, so test the final size carefully.

What a digital business card contains

A digital card QR encodes a URL to a public contact page. In this workspace, you can upload the original business card image and display contact buttons underneath it. Visitors can call, open WhatsApp, open an email application or download a vCard. They do not need to register. Creators sign in to save and update the page. Opening the hosted page requires internet access and an active domain, hosting account and saved record.

When an editable page is useful

Choose a hosted card if you expect to update a phone number, replace the artwork or add a website after distributing the QR. Edit the existing project rather than creating a replacement project: the existing identifier is what printed materials point to. Downloading a vCard from that page gives the visitor a copy of the contact at that time; later page changes do not automatically update contacts already saved on their phone.

When an offline contact QR is useful

Choose an offline contact QR when a simple, stable contact record is enough and you want it embedded directly in the printed pattern. Keep the fields concise. A scanner may show a contact import prompt rather than a branded page, and behavior varies between phone applications. Test both viewing and saving the contact on the devices your audience uses.

A checklist before printing

Confirm the international phone number and email spelling. Test the call and WhatsApp destinations. Use dark modules on a light background and keep the clear border. Scan the exported file and a printed sample at the intended size. Check that saving the contact produces the correct name and number. Keep a copy of the final QR and the destination URL with your artwork.

If you move the website

A hosted card QR already printed contains the old domain. Setting a new canonical domain does not alter that printed pattern. Keep the old domain and HTTPS available, and redirect each old card URL to its matching new URL with its identifier preserved. An offline vCard QR avoids reliance on this hosted card page, but any website URL embedded in its contact fields still needs to remain valid.
